2019 FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

Welcome to the inaugural Listowel International Storytelling & Folklore Festival at Kerry Writers’ Museum. We are delighted to present a packed programme of events including adult and children’s storytelling sessions & workshops, folklore talks, heritage walks and tours. We hope you can join us over the Festival weekend from September 6th to 8th.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH

10.30 am: TELL ME A STORY
Visiting storytellers Randel McGee from the USA and Lizzie McDougall from Scotland will enthrall local children with stories of myth and enchantment.
Suitable for children aged 7 to 12 years.
Venue: Kerry Writers’ Museum
Admission – €2 per child (Schools discount available)

1.30 pm: STORYTELLING AT THE CASTLE
Join storyteller Bryan Murphy for an open-air storytelling session at Listowel Castle, followed by tea & scones.
Venue – Listowel Castle amphi-theatre
Admission – €5

3.30 pm: FOLK TALES FROM THE HIGHLANDS
Come and hear stories from the Scottish Highlands with Lizzie McDougall.
Venue: Kerry Writers’ Museum

5.00 pm: RIVERS OF WORDS – MAURICE WALSH
A screening of the acclaimed documentary produced by the North Kerry Literary Trust in association with RTE.
Venue – Kerry Writers’ Museum
Admission – Free

8.00 pm: KERRY FOLK TALES
Named after the peoples of Ciarraige who inhabited the ancient territory, Kerry possesses a rich tapestry of history, legend and folklore unparalleled by many others. Luke Eastwood, co-author of the recently published ‘Kerry Folk Tales’ will narrate a variety of myths and fables that will take you on a journey through Kerry’s past.

9.30 pm: STORYTELLING AT JOHN B.s
Come along and tell your story at one of Listowel’s most famous hostelries.
Venue – John B. Keane’s Bar, William Street
Admission – Free

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH

11.00 am: LISTOWEL GUIDED HERITAGE WALK
Take a guided walk through Listowel with local historian Tom Dillon and hear stories of mutiny, murder, myths and legends of this Historic Town.

11.00 am: CHILDREN’S STORYTIME
With storyteller Godfrey Coppinger
Venue: Listowel Library
Admission – Free

12 noon: PAPER & SCISSORS ROCK!
In this storytelling workshop Randel McGee combines storytelling and paper crafting into a fun and intriguing program that engages peoples’ minds and inspires their imaginations.
Suitable for children aged 10 to 15 years

1.00 pm: LETS CREATE A STORY!
Join Godfrey Coppinger in a children’s workshop on how to create your own story.
Suitable for children aged 7 to 12 years

2.00 pm: REMEMBERING MAURICE WALSH
Take a tour with us to the Maurice Walsh Memorial Garden and the Thatch Bar, Lisselton to remember one of North Kerry’s finest writers through story, music & song.

5.00 pm: TALES FROM THE KINGDOM
Come and hear some of our great local storytellers.

8.00 pm: STORYTELLING CONCERT
Join our guest storytellers Lizzie McDougall, Randel McGee, Batt Burns, Frances Kennedy, Bryan Murphy and singer/songwriter Mickey McConnell for an evening of stories and music.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH

12 noon: CHILDREN’S STORYTIME
With storytellers Godfrey Coppinger & Randel McGee

1 pm: HUMOROUS VERSE
Join Sonia Elston, organiser of the ‘Jester of the Kingdom’ competition to hear some side splitting humorous bardic poetry. This is an open-mic event so come along and recite your own humorous verse.

3 to 6 pm: LISTOWEL RAMBLING HOUSE
To close our Festival weekend, join us for an informal afternoon of traditional Irish music, song, dance and storytelling. Light Refreshments served.

OTHER EVENTS

WINDOWS OF WONDER TOUR OF KERRY WRITERS’ MUSEUM

Take an audio tour of Kerry Writers’ Museum with storyteller Bryan and hear stories and songs of the great North Kerry writers.
From 9.30 am to 5 pm – tour takes approximately 1 hour.
Admission – €6

LISTOWEL CASTLE TOUR

Take a guided tour of the remains of this 15th century Castle overlooking Listowel Square, built by the Fitzmaurices, Anglo Norman Earls of Kerry.
From 9.30 am to 5 pm – tour takes approximately 45 minutes
Admission – Free
