School Tour Programme

Your day tour includes a visit to the Seanchaí – Kerry Literary & Cultural Centre, where pupils will learn about Kerry’s famous writers such as John B. Keane, Bryan MacMahon & Brendan Kennelly in the audio-visual museum.

Our special School Tour Programme includes a Treasure Hunt through the museum and storytelling with a local ‘Seanchaí’.

Follow this literary experience with a guided tour of the recently renovated Listowel Castle, built in the 15th century as a fortress by the Anglo Norman Earls of Kerry, the Fitzmaurices (available from 1st June).

The Programme also includes a nature trail through the Garden of Europe, Listowel’s ‘Secret Garden’, featuring shrubs and plants from several European countries. Enjoy a guided tour through this natural treasure and learn about the various plants on display.

Finish the day with a visit to the Lartigue Monorailway and take a trip back in time on this unique mode of transport, which operated in Listowel between 1888 & 1924. The visit includes a viewing of video footage of the original train and an historical talk by a local historian on this unique mode of transport.

Tour Guides are available for all activities, leaving teachers with time to sample the delights of our wonderful Town. We also provide teachers’ notes and students’ worksheets to help you get the most out of your visit.
